  1. I am the team captain and I try to find fun little tips or beginner type exercises for the team to try. I plan to give everyone on the team a little pack of gum so they can chew it to curb hunger between meals, rather than grab the unhealthy stuff. :) Andrea D. - Team Safety Dance

I am motivated by every person I see walking their dog, riding their bike, or jogging on a sidewalk. If other people are doing it, I can, too. It is also motivating to see other members of my Live Healthy team working their tails off. Great program.

  8. My 2-year-old Lab helps keep me motivated - she's full of energy and it's contagious! When we go "walking" it becomes her chance to make me run, so we really move! I also keep healthy snacks at my apartment rather than chips and cookies - I have cut veggies, fruit, air-popped popcorn, low-sodium crackers, applesauce ... Molly R, MarCom Movers

  9. I try to tap into others competitive spirit. I also offer insight to my own struggles to remind them that they are not alone in this challenge. We all have our obstacles, but it is all about doing your best to overcome them. My own motivation is that it will only get easier as these new lifestyle changes become habit and the new normal.

  13. My motivation comes from sharing the fun with those I work with. I belong to the same Kickboxing club as my colleague and we share stories of our daily workouts and recipes for healthy eating. A couple of my other colleagues and I go walking around the pond at HSSB.

  17. I meet girlfriends to run with in the morning before work. It is compelling because I am then responsible for someone else's workout too. And there is nothing more cathartic than spending an hour talking to a friend -- while burning 700 calories.

  18. Carole Kern - TriumphantTortises: We walk outside in nice weather or the sunny hallways in cold weather, together when possible. We share recipes and encourage each other as we make our personal goals. Each of us has different health strengths and read different materials which we share with each other. We strive to keep healthier snacks available and away from the low nutrition ones.

  20. It's really important to have a goal in mind- and make sure that goal is for YOU. If you're doing it for anyone but yourself, you won't stick with it. Also, LOTS of water! I drink almost a gallon/day. I also try to work out in the morning when possible. I feel like I stay on track with my diet more during the day since I don't want to ruin the progress I made that morning. It's also easier to talk yourself out of exercising when you get off work late or are tired at night--so get up and get it done early!

  22. I’m competitive with myself so I’m mostly trying to have more steps and minutes than the day before. Most mornings from seven to seven thirty I walk the halls of UIHC with my friend and coworker. Our friendship makes the walks interesting and we reinforce healthy habits. I try to walk at the Field House most noon hours. After work I quick change into comfortable clothing and do a 15 or 20 minute Leslie Sansone
Walk at Home DVD. I try to start and end each day doing tai chi practice and that is helpful in these stressful days politically. Carol and Jenny on my Triumphant Tortoises team are off to a great start. All the steps add up. I’m excited when my fit bit buzzes 10,000 steps.

I have my whole family involved in the weight loss journey with me. They help hold me accountable and they are my motivators when I just don't feel like I can keep going. In the same retrospect, I do the same for them and I motivate them when they are in the spot of not wanting to move on. I am lucky in the fact that I have that both at home and at work. I have double the encouragement and I give double the encouragement. It makes me want to keep going even that much more.

  24. I motivate myself by saying "I can do anything for 10 minutes." By saying that, I've committed to doing a workout for 10 minutes, and by the time I am 10 minutes in, I feel like I can do more. I just need to be motivated enough to put my sneakers on and out the door.

  25. Ashley T. Pathologically Fit. I find that staying motivated is easiest when I tell people about my goals. If I want to go to the gym after work, I'll tell my coworkers about it so I can't back out. I want to be able to tell people what I've been able to accomplish in hopes of motivating them as well.

  27. I've found that the best way for me to stay motivated is to be accountable to someone or a group. I also like reminders. I'm a big note person for everything in my life, so daily reminders and text messages keep me on track and motivated.

  28. Sara M. Healthy Hawks. I am running a race with a friend and we check-in with each other everyday to see how our exercise is going. It's helpful to have a goal and hold each other accountable.

To stay motivated, I think of fun ways to stay active even when I cannot make it to the gym. One way I have recently found is playing Hide and Seek with my 4 year old - you'd be amazed at how much of a work out this is.

Also, I have always struggled with getting enough fruits in my diet so I have been drinking fruit smoothies in the morning. This helps keep me motivated to make healthy diet decisions throughout my day!

  45. One thing I did to stay motivated as I do not have money for a gym right now is I do not watch my tv show at night and then in the morning I have a circuit training planned out (I like to mix things up) and then I will watch my show as I work out! I also talk with a friend about my working out to keep myself accountable.
